3 Good healthy snack foods for stronger immunity

You know those times when you just want to munch on something but an apple is too filling?

A biscuit won’t kill you, but what if you could use a little snack to strengthen your defences? These are perfect for such moments.

3 good healthy snack foods to reach out for

Good news: these foods are available dried so you can have them handy always. In fact, I try to grab a handful of each daily.

#1: Goji berries

Scientists found that drinking goji berry juice every day for 30 days helped to increase levels of immune cells and substances in the elderly, while helping them feel more energetic.

The daily juice they drank was apparently the same as eating 150 g of goji. But I urge you to eat the fruit because you get more fiber that way.

#2: Red dates

In one lab study, scientists tested 4 different extracts of red date. The extracts triggered human breast cancer cells to die while leaving normal and harmless cells intact. The extracts that showed the most anticancer effects contained triterpenic acids.

These extracts sound like awesome news for breast cancer sufferers. But for everyday use in your diet, it is safest to eat the actual fruit instead of relying on super effective extracts as they have left the perfect balance of their natural environments. They could cause side effects if taken on a long term basis.

#3: Blueberries

Blueberries are called a superfood because of their high antioxidant content. Tip: don’t eat them with milk. Unlike eating blueberries alone, eating them with milk will result in no increase in antioxidant activity in your body.

How does this happen? Antioxidant phytochemicals in blueberry called phenolics tend to bind with proteins, which is present in milk. When they join, the antioxidant activity of phenolics switches off.

In addition, milk reduces the absorbability of caffeic acid, another antioxidant present in blueberry.

What’s your favorite healthy snack?

Whatever you do, try to go for unprocessed whole plant foods.

Eaten in moderation, any fruit or vegetable will be a good choice as it contains a variety of nutrients in a balanced state–perfect for your immune system.
